You still remember how to fly a kite.

Saturday 3 October 2026 (tentative · confirmed a week out) · 4:30pm to 7:00pm · Green Roof lawn, Marina Barrage

One Saturday afternoon on the Marina Barrage rooftop lawn — ten people, a handful of kites, golden hour, and the city switching its lights on across the water.

Why give it a Saturday

How the day runs

4:30pm

Find us on the Green Roof lawn — look for the fish kite staked beside a blue cooler, drop your mat and say hello to nine strangers.

4:45pm

Draw a ribbon from the bag; whoever holds the matching colour is your kite-buddy, and the two of you get one kite to figure out together.

5:00pm

A short launching lesson from your host, then the good part: one of you holds, one of you runs, and everyone cheers the first kite that stays up.

5:45pm

The Highest Flyer: every pair lets out line at once, and the winning pair keeps their kite plus first go at the snack spread.

6:15pm

Lines tied off, we settle onto the mats for golden hour: drinks from the cooler, whatever snacks people brought, and the easy talk that follows a shared small victory.

6:55pm

Kites come down with the sun (the Barrage's rule), just as Marina Bay begins switching its lights on across the water.

7:00pm

The evening ends the way it wants to — some of us stroll back to the MRT together, some stay on the grass while the sky goes navy.

The practical bits

Included

  • Your kite for the afternoon · one between you and your kite-buddy, an easy-launch delta chosen to fly in gentle wind
  • String, tails and running repairs from a host who has untangled worse
  • Cold drinks in a cooler on the mats
  • A kite to take home for the highest-flying pair
  • A WhatsApp group that opens two days before, so you arrive already knowing names

Bring

  • A picnic mat · we keep a few spares, just say so when you book
  • Water and a cap; the lawn has no shade until the sun starts to drop
  • A snack to share if you feel like it · entirely optional, always welcome
  • Shoes you can jog ten steps in

If it rains: Early October sits in Singapore's inter-monsoon, when showers tend to come in the late morning and afternoon and often clear by evening, one reason we start at 4:30. A passing shower means we tuck into the Barrage's sheltered seating along the walkway, pass the snacks round, and wait it out; the lawn drains quickly, and kites fly fine off damp grass. If the forecast still looks properly wet at 2pm, we message the group, and everyone chooses between the following Saturday or a full refund.

Getting there: Green Roof lawn, Marina Barrage, 8 Marina Gardens Drive, an easy 8-minute walk from Gardens by the Bay MRT (TE22, Exit 1).

The token
S$15

S$15 a person covers your kite, cold drinks on the mats, and the organising. Ten guests on the lawn.

Asked, answered

Do I need to be sporty?

No. If you can stroll on grass and manage ten jogging steps to help a kite up, you are more than equipped. A good deal of the afternoon is sitting on a mat watching the sky.

I'd be coming alone. Is that odd?

Most people do. You are paired with a kite-buddy inside the first fifteen minutes, and the two of you fly one kite together.

What if it rains?

A passing shower and we wait it out under the Barrage's shelters with the snacks. If the 2pm forecast looks genuinely grim, we postpone to the following Saturday or refund you in full, your choice.

What's the refund policy?

Full refund up to 48 hours before, and always if we postpone and the new date does not suit you. If S$15 is ever the thing keeping you home, write to us and we will sort something out.
